Masterplan - Destination Uses


The Kings masterplan provided a clear framework for future development and the opportunity for innovative architecture at specified locations.

 

It placed the 'landmark' destination uses - the arena, convention centre, car park, piazza and hotel - at the northern (Albert Dock) end of the site, with the residential/mixed use component towards the south.


The arena and convention centre complex was designed by award winning architects Wilkinson Eyre. Its location on the waterfront and the distinctive curved roofs have created a major impact on the city's skyline.


The buildings are arranged to minimise vehicular access across the site, with servicing below ground. The adjoining piazza provides space where outdoor events catering for larger audiences can be accommodated
